    New to Selec-Trax

    Hi all,

Just got myself a 06/96 green Cherokee Classic and my first ever Jeep in 30 years. Never to old to start I guess.
Goes like a scolded cat, my son and daughter were very impressed.
Why is there part time 4 wheeel drive (high range) and then full time 4 wheel drive (high range) and low range? I'm used to Nissans and Toyota's either high range or low range.
Also why is it so difficult to engage low range? and then hard to get it back to two wheel drive. It seemed to wind the drivetrain up, then a big shunt as it released even though I had the transfer case in 2-wheel drive. Is there adjustment? I have checked the oil levels and it's okay.
I have tried to find any answers looking at the threads, which are a fantastic help.

    Thanks for any help.

Hi there, cant remember which was which. But l think the full time you cant use on road, and part time is for off road.(one or the other).

As for get out of 4wd drive l dont know, but mine does the same. so l would interested to if it can be fixed as well.

My simple 2c worth may not be enough but I'll tell you what I know. (Largely from this forum which as you say is great and VERY informative.)
Hope this is all correct but someone will say so if it isn't pretty soon.
2WD is garden variety of course but the front wheels are still driving the front shaft as there aren't any hub clutches and the like.
Fulltime 4WD (green light on dash) is high range and "unlocked" front to rear so fine to use on the road even "fulltime" if you want. Some do.
Part time 4WD (yellow light on dash) is also high range but "locked" front to rear so should only be used in times of low traction.
Part time 4WD low range is just as you would expect, and "locked" front to rear.
Changes between 2WD, FT 4WD, and PT 4WD should always be done on the move with the transmission in neutral, up to something like 80kph, than trans back into drive. (Hammonds in Brisbane told me when doing this to make it a quick and sharp movement and try to skip part time altogether.)
Changes between PT 4WD high range and PT 4WD low range should be done at walking pace only, but the same deal with the transmission.

You seem to get a lot of queries here about difficulties getting out of PT 4WD. (Myself included.) Since using the above method of changing the transfer case, it has pretty much been a non issue for me. If you still have dramas, then I'm out of my depth. Give it a go.

        Wheliebin is pretty right.
Part time should only be used PART TIME ie when on a loose surface.
Full time can be used FULLTIME - centre diff is unlocked. Can use on wet bitumen, dirt roads etc.

Low range is only part time as you would expect.

However to shift between 2wd and 4wd Part Time or Full Time can be done at up to 90kph, trans does not have to be in neutral, and the shift should be a smooth one (but needs to be firm on the lever).
To shift to low range vehicle should be stopped (or just rolling) and transmission in neutral. Lever needs to be pulled firmly, the gears need to mesh so could be some noise as it locks in.

This has come up a couple of times lately. This is one of those threads but there are others I'm sure:
I'm sure in my owners manual somewhere it states that part time 4X4 with selectrac can be selected at any speed up to 100kmh................have I read this wrong? as I saw another thread on this forum stating that you should stop..select neutral in the auto...select part time 4x4...then reselect drive and drive off. I did it
