Oil cooler seals only or new cooler as well

    Hi Guys,

With the jeep sitting so long (8 months) looks like I have the dreaded oil cooler leak.

Just wondering if I should also replace the oil cooler as well or just seals.

Will order oil cooler kit from idparts. (expensive freight)

    Any advice would be good.

    Cheers

I assume you are talking about a CRD?

My understanding is that it is almost always just the seals, the cooler itself doesn't often fail/leak.

There are upgraded seals that are purple in colour that are much better than the original, so make sure that those are the ones you replace them with.

Thanks. Yes it is a CRD. That was my original thought that it should only be the seals but I was talked into replacing the cooler as well, consensus was while I was doing the seals to do the oil cooler as well because you wouldn't want to put back together and find oil cooler stuffed and have to do the job again.
So I decided to get the cooler as well.
      Thanks again for your advice.
      Cheers

Probably not a bad choice while you have it all apart mate.

Are you going to do this job yourself?

Would be interested to hear how you get on and how long it takes when you do it.
Mine aren't leaking but it's probably a good preventative thing to look at doing especially on a 2006 CRD.

That's A good idea as I am not a mechanic just feel I can do the job myself with help from a friend. It will take me awhile as I will only get every second Friday to work on it. I will try and keep my progress updated.

At this stage I don't think the oil is coming from the oil cooler. I have had a good look with a cheap inspection camera and cannot see any oil sitting in the valley so I will continue the search.
