    WJ Balljoint removal

I'm getting all the bits ready to do my balljoints over Easter. Ive got the set of 4 balljoints, but everything I read about Dana 30 balljoints states they use the big C clamp style press with receiver cups etc.
Question is, I've done this on other cars and been able to whack em out with a sledge or air hammer will drive them out, doesn't matter if the old ones get rooted on the way out, they're going in the bin anyway, then for install a quick tap with suitable sized socket for the new ones that have been in the freezer overnight, will this work or am I better off holding off and buying the bloody press on eBay?

Hey Grippy, I got the press from here for $50 buxes.

Shop eBay I reckon. You'll have an easier time, 6 beer Vs a dozen job.

I've been thinking I need to bite the bullet and get the damn thing but looking for excuses to not, haha.
I don't wanna pull it all apart to not be able to get the suckers out, although a quick hit with the air hammer should push them out
The driver's side lower has started to randomly pop, usually as I start to move the steering wheel, pretty sure it's the culprit, CV looks good, other bits down there look to be alright too

I've looked at those eBay ball joint presses, such as this one - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Universal...wAAOSwOgdYt9v6

The vid's I've watched on youtube indicate a tapered adapter is needed but I see no such beast in the kits under $100. Thoughts?

I'd say if you can get a suitable press for around $60 as per those on eBay then well worth it.

I imagine you could adapt this tool to also do bushes as well.

i just made my own out of RHS and some pipe with a hydraulic ram to press them out.
Some of the cheaper ebay ones have been known to break, it takes several ton to press them out, you could look into renting one from somewhere, not sure where though.

Any pics of this rig you made mate? I love a bit of diy

On the other hand I have thought about welding up a bit of pipe to one of the chisel pieces on the air hammer to fit snug where the press cup would and give it a quick burst, have seen a few videos of a similar attachment that made short work of punching them out and easy back in

Oh and another question, can the hub and bearing assembly be left bolted to the axle and it come out all together once the hub is unbolted from the axle tube, or do I need to separate it? It would save me having to buy the 36mm socket, and I am guessing a whole lot of swearing undoing the sucker

Take a look at this video. Gives you the low down on what is in store for you. And just buy the 36 deep impact socket with a half inch adapter for a hammer drive. Makes life easy. I paid about $17 for the socket from Trade Tools.
