just did a quick mock up of my rear bar and tyre carrier that i want to start making sooner rather than later.
basically its going to be a fairly typical wheel carrier, but with a couple of rose joints on a rod to hopefully open the carrier with the rear tail gate very similar to the rugged ridge tire carrier linkage kit.
plan on being able to put a couple of 20l jerrys on as well as unfortunately, fuel tank size isn't great on a 2door so having ~100 litres should be perfect.
also thinking of having a gas strut from the tyre carrier to the rear bar in between the tyre carrier and tailgate to keep it open hopefully hsouldn't be too hard, just need to make sure it wont foul the tail gate.
anyway, heres a couple of pics
more or less basic design
design 1, with horizontal and vertical support for jerrys
design 2 w/ jerrys only having one arm off carrier at 45 degrees
rear of the bar:
im thinking option 2 at the moment, saves a bit of weight and should make it easier to have access to the tailgate handle.
at this stage these are my rough material dimensions"
recovery points that go through the bumper skin and bolt with 2 bolts to the inside of the chassis rail:
these will also provide my only mounting points for the rear bar, I will use the biggest bolts i can fit in the current chassis holes to try and prevent moving/pivoting, and this way i don't rely on welds for recovery points.
dimensions: 50mm tall, 20mm thick, protruding about 50mm through the outside of the bumper, on the rear of the bumper pic, you can see these sticking out.
bumper itself, about 170mmX200mmX4mm thick steel angle. 170 will be the horizontal piece, 200 will be the vertical, will drill a hole in the horizontal part for the stub axle and weld it to the inside of the vertical as well (everyone think this will be strong enough?)
stub axle: unsure what size i should get and what size bit of pipe will fit over it snuggly for the pivot point of the carrier, so dimensions and links welcome.
tire carrier: all in 50X20mmX3mm thick square section
wheel carrier: 50X50X3mm and i'll have two, three bolt flanges so these can stay permanently in my road and mud tyres so when i want to swap i just slide the new one into the 50X50 section, not unbolt tyres etc.
let me know what you guys think and issues you see, also dimension queries etc.
