Has anyone with the KJ taken their jeep to have this done:
Number 21-009-09 Nov 14th 2009 supersedes two 2007 versions. Applies to many Chryslers incl 2004-2007 KJ with the 42RLE transmission. Improved hill climb capability in reverse. or DTC's P1713, P1776. requires selectively erasing and reprogramming the power control module with new software.
TSB # is 21-009-09
Flash 42rle Improved hill climb capability
There is a bulletin through Chrysler on this code and it involves reprogramming the PCM.
SUBJECT:
Flash: 42RLE - Improved Hill Climb Capability In Reverse Or DTC's P1713 / P1776
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control
Module (PCM) with new software.
MODELS:
**2004 (AN) Dakota**
2006 (DR) Ram Truck
2005 - 2006 (HB) Durango
**2004** - 2006 (KJ) Liberty / Cherokee
2005 - 2006 (ND) Dakota
2005 (TJ) Wrangler
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A. The vehicle operator may experience a low torque condition from the vehicle powertrain
that may reduce the capability of the vehicle to ascend certain grades/hills when the
transmission is in reverse gear (while backing up).
B. The customer may experience, separate from the above low torque condition, a
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination due to one of the following transmission
related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's):
- P1713 - Restricted Manual Valve In T2 Range.
- P1776 - Solenoid Switch Valve Latched In LR Position.
Prior to the MIL illumination for one of the above transmission related DTC's, the customer
may not have experienced any transmission related driveability conditions.
If this update hasn't been performed previously I would suggest having this done by your local dealership before any diagnostics are performed as this update could clear the code and allow for better transmission performance and no actual repair may need to be done to solve the issue.
